GREETINGS!

I know it is not a great year with all the tragedies and sad stories that we've heard and saw in the news.

There's the typhoon, the financial crisis, the swine flu, war, death of prominent people, lots of sadness, lots of problems..

But still, we managed to survive despite everything.

This Christmas, I believe and hope that we can still be happy and share this happiness with the people we love and to those we think needs it the most.

So to everyone,

Fire near our house

At around 11 am today, we heard some explosions. Apparently, there's fire near our house. Our house is located near the Victory Liner Bus Station along Edsa, Pasay - so we were able to see the fire from our rooftop. We don't know yet the exact cause of the fire, but what I'm sure of is that it is still happening until now. There are a lot of fire trucks passing by our streets. We still hear explosions and the smoke from the fire has reached our area so we closed all our windows and we're wearing masks.

Brittany Murphy...

We all remember her as the chubby, bubbly girl in Clueless, starring alongside actress Alicia Sylverstone. She got really skinny years after and became one of the sexiest actors in Hollywood.

Balangay takes a Christmas break, will resume voyage next year

After more than 100 days, 41 ports, and 894 nautical miles of navigating the Luzon and Visayas islands, the Balangay is still on track to complete its voyage around the country in nearly 2010.

The Balangay, named Diwata ng Lahi, is now docked in Butuan City, the location of the original excavated ancient sea vessel and the first port for the 6th leg of the journey. It is currently undergoing repairs in the city after "marine borers" infested parts of the boat's planks, which were made form the native "apitong." The wood used in the construction of the Balangay was not chemically treated to replicate how the boat was made in ancient times.

When it starts its 2010 voyage, the Diwata will be joined by another balangay made in Butuan. From Butuan, the team led by Art Valdez, Kaya ng Pinoy founder and First Philippine Mount Everest Expedition team leader, will finisg the 6th leg in Ozamis  City.

Zamboanga City will be the last port to be visited on the 7th leg, right after stopovers in Oroquieta, Dapitan, Sindangan, Labason, Siocon, and Sibuco.

For 13 days, the Balangay team will complete the 8th leg, which includes Panubigan, Port Banga, Olutunga, Limbug Cove, Pagadian, Malabang, and Cotabato City. These stops have been strategically chosen based on the Balangay's maintenance and docking specifications.

For the last two legs, the boat replica will sail through Davao City, Saranggani Island and Bongao, among the 19 ports that comprise the latter part of its itinerary. The Voyage's last stop will be the town of Sibuto in Tawi-Tawi, situated at the tip of the Philippine archipelago.

"We look forward to immersing ourselves to the wonderful culture of our brothers and sisters in Mindanao. After witnessing the national pride enveloping our fellow Filipinos from Luzon and Visayas, the Balangay Team is optimistic that we will learn and know more of our southern heritage," said Valdez.

A friend of mine, Fung, was able to join Team Balangay during their trip to Butuan. (Go ahead, click it!)

Gunfires in Ampatuan

Saw this post from Edwin Sevidal. He's a reporter from ABS-CBN Radio - DZMM ---

"Police convoy ambushed in Bgy. Labo-Labo 2, Ampatuan, Maguindanao... burst of gunfire from government troops heard for the first time."

The situation in Ampatuan is getting worst - the massacre, the election, and then the martial law... I hope no civilians were hurt.

Update: Tck Tck Tck

I just want to share this message that Tck Tck Tck campaign emailed me. I hope more people will join in our fight against climate change. ---

Dear Climate Ally,

The United Nations Climate Conference is now upon us. On Monday, world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to decide on a new post-Kyoto climate agreement.

As you know, we are campaigning for a global deal that is fair, ambitious and binding. But with the conference starting on Monday, we urgently need your help in order to make this happen.

There are a number of things you can do to support the final push over the weekend through our website at www.timeforclimatejustice.org.

You can send a message directly to your political leader about the deal we need in Copenhagen by using the "Lobby Your Leader" tool on the website.

You can tell your friends about the campaign. The more people who support Climate Justice, the stronger the campaign will be and the more likely politicians are to listen. By using new functions on the website, you can Tweet and Facebook about the campaign, and Email your friends encouraging them to join us.

Finally, you can sign our musical petition by downloading for free the campaign track "Beds are Burning", to which over 55 artists contributed, including Duran Duran, All American Rejects and Milla Jovovich.

You can also buy your own individually numbered campaign tck tag, tck watch or tck pin to wear during and after Copenhagen as a visible symbol of the fight for Climate Justice, or make a donation to the campaign.Download and use the Tck Tck Tck logo and other bits. Our website also has details about our high-profile Climate Allies, including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Jet Li, Vitali Klitschko, HM Queen Rania of Jordan, the UN’s climate chief Yvo de Boer and many others.

The deal reached in Copenhagen will have a real impact on people around the world, but it is the world’s poorest who are suffering most from the effects of climate change. Therefore we must put this final pressure on our political leaders to deliver a fair, ambitious and binding agreement.

This issue is too important to leave to the politicians alone.

Please help to spread the word. Tck tck tck. It’s Time for Climate Justice.

Surprise twist saves two Pinoy bets on HP Space

Still nine contestants are on their way to getting a dream job and US$50,000 in the new pan-Asian reality television series HP Space after a surprise twist in the latest episode save the day for three contestants, including the two Filipino bets in the show.

The total 16 contestants at the beginning of the show were down to nine, with the Filipino pair still intact, coming in to episode four of this new exciting series shown every Wednesday at 9 pm on Star World. Another elimination is up, and three more candidates will need to pack up their belongings and return home at the end of the episode from Singapore, where this two-month show is staged.

Adrienne Vergara

Raffy Francisco

Filipinos Raffy Francisco, a filmmaker, and 25-year-old performer Adrienne Vergara, along with their teammate Lora Lee, a design student from China, landed at the bottom of the three teams this week, which means they will be eliminated. However, the contestants were in for a big surprise: episode four was a non-elimination round, and the three were given a second chance to prove their worth.

The Filipinos survived the elimination – thanks to luck – but not without valuable lessons learned, especially for Francisco who was the only thorn among the two roses. He said being at the bottom and almost got eliminated made him realize that he must assert himself at every challenge.

For this episode, each team was asked to convert a confined hotel room into a modern, sleek and chic living space. The challenge was to redesign a bare room by incorporating Singapore iconography with a contemporary feel using textures with sleek and modern lines for the living space, and also, to show how HP personal computers can be an attractive entertainment center.

The week’s mentor Douglas Young, creator of G.O.D., took the contestants to Chinatown, Little India, and Geylang in search of design motives and iconography that they will translate into the modern design that pays homage to their Asian heritage.

The concept and room design of Singaporean art director David Tang, Korean motion graphic designer Uni Lee, and Indian photographer Rohit Ferriera impressed the judges most.

Graphic designer Note Kunprasop from Thailand and illustrator Admira Pustika from Indonesia, struggled with Indian visual artist Sawan Singh, and the team suffered some “unforgivable” misses with their room design. But in the end, the team impressed the mentor by taking the risk of embracing the clichés.

Francisco, Vergara, and Lee’s design was a disaster, with another contestant commenting the room looked like a porn studio. Francisco made a short video presentation of their idea and somehow made the judges appreciate their concept. However, it wasn’t enough to save them from falling to the bottom.

HP Space, the latest platform for Asia’s aspiring talents to cultivate, nurture, and showcase their passion for creativity and the arts, is an entertaining new television series to watch on Star World. The show is a welcome breather on a Wednesday night, the middle of a work week. And with two Pinoys with strong chances of making it to the last man or woman standing, Filipinos have more reasons to enjoy this new Asian hit.

The show gets more exciting with each episode and the challenges more demanding of creativity and talent. Episode five looks to be another blockbuster with the contestants strutting their stuff in fashion. Be sure to catch it every Wednesday at 9 pm on Star World.

About HP SPACE
HP SPACE is an original pan-Asian reality television series that celebrates the spirit of creative innovation in Asia and encourages aspiring talents to discover their potential. The show provides a community that creates a unique space and environment in which young, creative hopefuls can express their talents during eight, one-hour episodes. The shows’ format will see the contestants challenged each week with a new creative task, ranging from multi-media and visual art to product design, music, fashion, and publishing. Well-known personalities in the field of arts, design, and creativity will act as mentors to the contestants, guiding them through their creative journey. To assist them in their quest, each contestant will also receive the very latest, cutting edge product innovations from HP.

As the contestants stretch their imagination beyond the conventional, they will be judged on the basis of their performance and votes from the viewers, and rewarded with prizes and opportunities to fuel their creative passion.

500 days of Summer is truly not a love story, it's a story about love

500 Days of Summer may not be you typical happily-ever-after type of movie, but I liked it.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is hella good.

(Is it just me or does Zooey Deschanel really looks like Katy Perry?!)

The editing is great, the intentionally jumbled sequences has further enhanced the emotional effect of the movie, making me appreaciate more and understand what Tom Hansen (Gordon-Levvitt) has gone through and its effect on his feelings towards Summer.

500 Days of Summer is literally about Tom Hansen's 500-day relationship with a girl named summer. The movie doesn't have a happy ending, well at least not for them as a couple, but I think the ending is good because it just showed a realistic kind of love between two people living in a real world - not your typical love wherein amidst all - the breakup, the fights, the sex, their differences, etc.; they still got back together, got married, had kids and will live happily-ever-after...

My fave scenes:

  • Elevator scene when they first talked to each other
  • The Hall and Oates "You make my dreams" dance scene
  • Reality vs Expectation scene (THIS IS MY MOST FAVE)

Fans of disney movies might not appreciate how love has been portrayed in this movie, but for me, this is what a relationship should be if your perspective on love is the same as Tom's or Summer's. I mean, if you're not happy with your man, why prolong the suffering? Why stay if it's unhealthy for you? The honest thing to do and believe me, your partner will appreciate it in the long run (of course he'll hate you at first if you broke up with him, duh! But he'll soon realize that what you did for your relationship is right) is to end your relationship with your partner. During these times, the line "Try and Try until you succeed" will not work. You'll end up trying until you're dead. And you'll be bitter all throughout because you had wasted so many years trying to fix it instead of enjoying your life, meeting a lot of people, experiencing new things, and maybe find a better guy for you eventually.

And for the soundtrack, all I can say is I LOVE THE SOUNDTRACK! It's a feel good album with songs by Regina Spektor, The Smiths and other bands that will brighten your day. "Brighten" as in you-will-feel-as-if-you-are-in-a-full-color-animated-world-when-you-listen-to-the-songs "brighten."

If you don't believe me, here's one of my fave songs off the OST: Sweet Disposition by The Temper Traps---

Thirty Seconds to Mars' new album set to be released on December 8

I just learned that Thirty Seconds to Mars has an upcoming album - This Is War. The album is set for release on December 8, but the first single, Kings and Queens has been ruling the rock charts. I read somewhere that they'll launch the first single through a live performance in the Tonight Show on December 10.

Aaaaaw, Jared Leto. *sigh

Here's the first single off This Is War album, Kings and Queens. Love the video.

All are WOW.

The visuals in this mtv has so many meanings. And if I may quote the press release from their site - "The video, a short film entitled “The Ride” shot this past month in Los Angeles is inspired by the critical mass and crank mob movement, founded with forward thinking and eco-conscious intentions, and celebrates this amazing community of riders on a night time journey downtown LA to Santa Monica.  For this epic short film the band shut down Hollywood blvd, Santa Monica pier and sections of downtown Los Angeles, making this their love letter to the city of angels."

Whoa.

Entertainment Weekly's New Moon covers

Can't get enough of New Moon? Then there's more! And I don't think it will ever cease making/publishing anything related to it. Maybe once Eclipse promotion has started, then that's the time they'll stop promoting New Moon-related stuff; and then Eclipse will take their place and start selling theirs. Haha!

Jumping on the bandwagon of anything New Moon is Entertainment Weekly magazine with their collectors' edition of Team Bella, Team Edward and Team Jacob individual magazine covers.

New Moon: Made for the fans

After months of waiting, New Moon, the second installment of the Twilight Saga, is now in theaters. Just in case you're from Mars, like the person sitting next to me, (HAHA!) Twilight Saga is 4-book series written by Stephenie Meyer about a love between a vampire and a mortal.

In New Moon, the new vampire-mortal couple will now start to experience the struggles of having a complicated relationship. And when I say complicated, it's complicated x 10, and the most evident of all these complications is the fact that he loves her as much as he wants her blood.

And now my review ---

  • New Moon's color is better than Twilight's. In Twilight, the general color is blue, and I think it best describes Edward's world - cold and lifeless. But in New Moon, director Chris Weitz chose warm tones for the film, somewhat brown and yellowish, to best describe the new leading character in the film, Jacob the werewolf - hot and full of life.
  • New Moon has better soundtrack than Twilight. The album alone is a great listening company with tracks from the Killers, Death Cab for Cutie and Thom Yorke. But although the songs exemplify the general melancholic mood of the movie, some of the scoring done were not good. Some of them don't fit in the scene and in effect, it distracted me as a viewer.
  • In fairness, the actors were better in this movie. There's an improvement in the acting of the three. Rob needs to improve his American accent and sometimes I can't hear his lines. I don't know if that's his fault or the boom man didn't do his job well. Kristen, I'll admit, I appreciate her beauty in this movie. She had an improvement in her acting here, but I don't know, I think she's still too stoic in some scenes. Billy Burke for me, still has the small yet best performance of them all. When I watched him act as Bella's dad, it matches the character that I have in my head when I was reading the book. I'm so looking forward to the character of Aro and Jane and I think Sheen and Fanning did justice to them. Not that great, but "what the hell!" I still love them and I'm looking forward to them in Breaking Dawn. Mike Newton = funny!; Felix = scary.
  • Some of the effects weren't cleanly done. Especially in Sam Uley's cliffdiving scene. It's so obvious that it's CGI! The fight scene between Felix and Edward is good.
  • The locations were beautiful! I can't believe that such forest really exists! I thought it just a set, but it's real. Whoever discovered that forest for New Moon, wow man, you're great! And the Italy scene, that's what I exactly envisioned when I was reading that part! The red cloaked people, the clock... Whoa!
  • My fave scenes: Bella's dream scene where she found herself facing her old self; Bella's cliffdiving scene; Victoria's wolf chase; the Volterra scene - from the yellow porsche to the Felix and Edward fight scene; and my super like: "Monthly transition" scene, where Bella just sat there moping, and the scene around her changes from month to month...Nicely done.
  • Some scenes are unintentionally funny. And that's bad. It meant that some scenes were awkwardly acted out that I laughed when I watched them.
  • The ending (Edward proposed to Bella informally, then cut to black) which teases us on the next installment, Eclipse, the treatment on that is great. It really got me excited on Eclipse!
  • Unfortunately, there's still some cheesy scenes in the movie. And I mean, melted Mozarella Cheese! And the cheesiest of them all? Do I really need to elaborate? If you've watched the movie, you should know what I'm talking about. If you're clueless, here's the photo:

Do I still need to explain why? Okay, here's the why. It's like watching a video from a Karaoke song. Two lovers chasing each other, but instead of a beach setting, the chasing was done in the forest.
I love Edward, but this is so cheesy!

To sum up everything, New Moon was made really for the fans. If you're there to fall in love, see Robert Pattinson in his glorious vampire self, feast your eyes on half naked, sexy adult men, and wants to see something visually beautiful, regardless of the content, then this movie is for you. But if you're a diehard book fan and wants to see its film adaptation, you might be happy at some parts, but there are some that you'll be disappointed. And if you're a critic, then you'll find a lot of flaws in this movie and at the end, you'll just say that it's a movie specifically targeted to teenagers and mothers who wants a guy like Edward and Jacob and you'll be sad for them because everything you'll say about the movie will just break their hearts.

--- And by the way, I still think the New Moon book is kinda anti-feminist. The guy left you, you almost die because of depression, then he returns, asking you to accept him again with a begging-eyes-look, then you'll just accept it just like that?! And with a kiss and hug?!? Huh.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan.

Robin Thicke's "special" therapy...

Ever since "Lost without You" has hit the airwaves, I've been a fan of Robin Thicke. I think he's an underrated singer and his label doesn't work double time to promote him not only in the states, but also in the other parts of the world. I wish he'll do a concert here in the Philippines. I would love to hear him sing live.

Please!!!

If you'll listen to his songs, you can feel the love for his wife, Paula. And I really envy that girl - they've been a steady couple, her husband has one of the sexiest voice I've ever heard, and his songwriting skills, just WOW.

And now, he's back with a new song, and I think girls who haven't celebrated their 18th birthday yet must listen to this song with their parents. (Hehe!)

The title is Sex Therapy - and it is really sexy and the way he sang it, it made me feel relaxed, as if the place has gotten colder and you'll feel like you want to close your eyes and just rest after listening to it.

And for twilight fans out there, there's a mention of "twilight" in this song! Haha!

I think the album will come out on December 15, can't wait to hear all the cuts!

If you don't believe me, watch this ---

And here's the lyrics if you're still not convinced:

To Cebu Pacific (part 2)

So I called the bank, and they said that Cebu Pacific has already cancelled the second booking and I won't be charged anymore. I only have to pay the first booking when my bill arrives next month.

It may have took them weeks to process my case, but nevertheless,
thank you Cebu Pacific for doing something about it.

And I wish you've already started doing some improvements in your system
so that this won't happen again.
Think about it, you'll be able to save yourself from headaches that you'll get from irate customers if you've already started fixing it. This may cost you, but getting customers' trust is all worth it. =)

Skechers Streetdance Battle New Champions

I was at the Araneta Coliseum awhile ago for the coverage of Skechers Streetdance Battle Finals.

10 highschool and 15 college dance crews battled it out for the 100,000 cash price and the bragging rights of being the best and the sickest dance crew in the country.

And Wow. These kids can really dance!

At the end, University of the Philippines-Diliman and Claret School were crowned new champions of the 5th Skechers Streetdance Battle.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You shouldn't watch Paranormal Activity alone

Another "random thoughts" post about a movie that I just recently watched.

Just watched Paranormal Activity
at SM Megamall.
Thank you Azrael for the pass. =)

Now, some of my thoughts..

It's scary, it kept me wondering, I screamed at the ending, I liked it.

The sleepwalking. Scary.

The scene wherein the girl had a sudden change of personality and was talking to "something" other than her bf with a lovestruck look on her face, scarier.

The ending, scariest.

More writeup about it in the coming days. I need a breather. I'm too scared to even recall the scenes so that I can write something about it.

Baby Blue Whale in the Philippines

Last November 17, I was in Glorietta 5 for the National Geographic's Big Blue Exhibit. Nat Geo has partnered with Ayala Malls and Mind Museum to bring to the Philippines a life-size sculpture of the baby blue whale - the biggest mammal in the world.

The Big Blue Exhibition will take visitors into the world of the magnificent blue whales. The sophisticated sculpture will be the highlight of the event. It is a life-like rendering of a nine-meter long, two-month old, female blue whale that was created by a team of professional model makers in Australia.

The exhibition also includes expert sharing sessions, conservation and education activities, and a feature writing competition. It features never-before-seen footages from National Geographic’s groundbreaking documentary, Big Blue.

The Big Blue Exhibition will run in five different venues on the following dates: Glorietta 5, November 17-26; Trinoma Mall, November 28-December 11; Alabang Town Center, January 4-17; Market! Market!, January 18-February 2; and Greenbelt Mall, February 3-17.

“The National Geographic Channel is delighted to launch Asia’s first Blue Whale Exhibition in Manila, in partnership with Ayala Malls and the Mind Museum. We hope that this inspiring encounter with this majestic creature will spark imaginations and further interest in marine conservation and how oceans relates closely to the well-being of humans,” said Sonia Jackson, senior vice president for marketing and general manager for Hong Kong and the Philippines of Fox International Channel, the mother company of National Geographic Channel.

The Ayala Malls, led by Ayala Group senior vice president Marivic Anonuevo, is committed to support the National Geographic’s efforts to encourage Filipinos to care for this beautiful creature and raise awareness of marine conservation in the Philippines.

Learn from the expert

National Geographic and The Mind Museum have invited local marine mammal scientist Dr. Arnel Andrew Yaptinchay to host special sharing sessions to inspire students and visitors of the Big Blue Exhibition.

Dr. Yaptinchay is one of the volunteer scientists providing advice on some exhibits for the museum. He is involved in conservation initiatives on threatened marine species such as the whale shark, cetaceans, and dugong in the Philippines. Dr. Yaptinchay has once served as director for the Species Conservation Program of World Wide Fund-Philippines. He will share his experiences with local audiences and answer questions.

Big Blue documentary

Showing on National Geographic Channel 18 November at 7 pm, 21 November at 11 am, and 22 November at 8 pm, the two-hour Big Blue special is the first documentary to uncover the mysteries of the blue whale.

The special features never-before-seen moments in the life of blue whales, with stunning first-time footage of a blue whale calf and its mother and amazing shots of an adult blue whale singing.

Audiences will also get a unique whale’s view through an advanced technology developed by National Geographic called CRITTERCAM®, which allows unprecedented access into the animal kingdom without human interference.

This state-of-the-art research device was attached to a blue whale’s back to record footages of the animal as it travels deep into the ocean to allow scientists to study its behaviors.

I've watched New Moon!

MY WAIT IS OVER.

I'VE FINALLY WATCHED NEW MOON!
I was able to watch the advance screening at SM Megamall.

What can I say?

I think Chris Weitz's directing is better.

I think the "future" scene that Aro saw is kinda cheesy.

There are some parts of the scoring that I don't like.

Weitz did great on the "monthly transitions."

Bella's prettier and was able to convey her emotions here better. Edward's acting is getting better.
Jacob, I'll admit, is kinda hot. So many shirtless guys. The Volturi scene is great.

There are some lines of Edward that I can't understand. (I need subtitles)

The ending. WAAAAAH! I'll bet, you will also scream.

I'm still hyperventilating.

Can't wait for June 2010. Eclipse.

I'll do a more elaborated post on this.

A day of colorful sails at Punta Fuego's Annual Regatta

It was a sunny morning when we arrived at the Punta Fuego. We were there to cover the Regatta event - Punta Fuego's 8th Sailing and Windsurfing Exhibition.

They had already started sailing when we arrived at Marina. So what we did is asked if they can lend us a motorboat so that the press can get closer shots of the sails in action.

Thank God I brought sunblock!

After snapping some photos, we went to the Peninsula de Punta Fuego for lunch. Their mango shake is the best! I got pizza and pasta for lunch while of them ordered for rice meals. Even the Regatta participants stopped by to take their lunch breaks at the cafe. For dessert, we ordered some ice cream. halo-halo and turon. We ate them at the Cabanas by the beach. The desserts may be overpriced, judging from the way they tasted, but all in all, the experience of eating dessert by the beach - It was really relaxing...

After lunch, we went back to the Terrazas to check in and freshen up. Haaaay, the life of the rich... Everything is so high end. I can't be too loud because I'm surrounded by millionaires, I'm afraid that they might give me the "librarian's look" - the look that you'll get when you're the only loud person in the area and they can't get a decent rest because of you. Fortunately, I was able to keep my behavior as acceptable as possible, managing to be still funny and chattery without bothering anybody.

Going back to the event, Punta Fuego hosted a dinner for the participants of the Regatta. We were able to taste the food prepared by Chef Mikel Arruiz. I got myself a serving of salad, mashed potatoes, pasta, chicken and pork. I'm not a fan of wine, but I still got myself a glass..

It was a great night. There was music provided by a Manila-based band, and there's an unlimited serving of wine and beer for the guests. It was cold and windy, but not chilly. At 12 am, we went back to our rooms to get some sleep since we have to be up by 7 am tomorrow.

........

This is what I call sigh... It's good to be rich. ----

After a big breakfast composed of omelet, pancakes, rice, tocino, fish fillet and fruits.. (HAHAHA! Gluttony!) We head to the Marina to do some pre0race interviews of the participants. Luckily for us, some of them has just arrived also at the Marina so we were able to get some.

We weren't satisfied with the photos that we get yesterday, so we requested for another boat ride to chase those sails and get a new set of sail shots.

IMG_3586

The boat ride was bumpy, but thank God I didn't get seasick!

After the ride, we grab lunch at the Punta Fuego's Italian cafe. Then I left them to go back to Manila for a radio interview at Quezon City. Too bad I wasn't able to stay til dinner, but it was fun!
