Alice in Wonderland: From Technicolor to Disney 3D

It's been 59 years since Walt Disney created a feature length animation adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Today, Alice in Wonderland now belongs to Disney's top classics alongside Snow White and Cinderella.

I remember having watched only 2 versions of this Lewis Carroll masterpiece, one is the adaptation of Walt Disney and the other one is the surreal adaptation of Czech director Jan Svankmajer entitled Neco z Alenky in 1988.

If Walt Disney's adaptation is intended for mass distribution and family viewing, Jan Svankmajer's style combined live action and stop-motion animation of some of the wonderland characters. The film is so overwhelming and gruesome at times that it was so hard for me to take it all in. Today, it is now considered a cult masterpiece.

Svankmajer's Alice is just one of those many adaptations of this classic, from silent film to musical. There's even a porno adaptation of this film (Alice in Wonderland, 1976). Some of these adaptations were great, some were just okay.

Now fasttrack to 2010...

Director Tim Burton whose famous films includes Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare before Christmas, Beetle Juice, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd, will attempt on creating his adaptation of Alice In Wonderland. I think this will also be Walt Disney's second feature-length attempt to produce this Caroll Classic.

Aside from the fact that it is directed by one of my faves, another reason for making this film a must-watch is its cast - Johnny Depp who plays the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays the White and Red Queen, respectively. It will also be interesting to watch Alan Rickman playing the Blue Caterpillar and Timothy Spall as the Bayard.I think this will be the biggest break of Mia Wasikowska, who will play the lead character, Alice.

What made me more hungry to watch this movie? It has a 3D VERSION PEOPLE!!! Imagine, a film that combines Burton's imagination, great actors, classic story and Disney's technology...THIS IS A MUST SEE!

And the great thing about it is that it will arrive in Philippine Theaters on MARCH 4, 2010. Mark your calendars!

And something to salivate over..

Azrael will be giving away a movie prop from Alice in Wonderland. I loved it, and trust me, you'll love it too..
